New Vid: Sherlock BBC - Anomie

Video Title: Anomie
Song Title/Artist: People Are Strange - Infected Mushroom Remix
Source: Sherlock BBC
Summary: A faceless city where everyone is a stranger.
Length/Format: 03:12, (Xvid, Stream)
Notes: Spoilers for all eps season 1.

Anomie: Term coined by Emile Durkheim refers to a breakdown of social norms. A condition where norms no longer control the activities of members in society. Individuals cannot find their place in society without clear rules to help guide them. Changing conditions lead to dissatisfaction, conflict, and deviance. He observed that social periods of disruption (economic depression, for instance) brought about greater anomie and higher rates of crime, suicide, and deviance.

Durkheim felt that sudden change caused a state of anomie. The system breaks down, either during a great prosperity or a great depression, anomie is the same result.

What a cool concept for a vid! I love that the focus is on the side characters. Fantastic editing, as always. :)

Awesome! I love how London becomes as much of a character as Sherlock and John.

I really liked this! The structure is really terrific, and I love the way Watson doesn't appear - or barely appears, appears unmarked - until the end, almost as if suggesting as if Watson's going to change Sherlock's strange relationship to the strange world he inhabits; at the very least, he's much less alone, now. *g* I also like the way you've adopted this omnicient POV to give us a Sherlock's Eye View of London. Great vid!

This is incredibly gorgeous, I was like, holding my breath throughout the whole thing. I love the little ways you emphasized the beats with even small cuts or perfectly timed motion.

Brilliant! And to add what other people have said, you've really brought out some of the best bits of the cinematography in highlighting the city and characters.

Ooh, very cool and shiny. I've heard about this show, but this is the first video I've seen. I'm intrigued, and I love the music you picked.

Fantastically well done, particularly the timing. *applauds*

Also here from Cesperanza's rec. This vid is amazing! I have nothing constructive to say, but I will repeat what others have said: the timings are perfect, the focus of the vid is original and very well done, and I love the ending - Sherlock and John bumping into each other. I will definitely watch again. Thank you!

I really enjoyed this! I love the way you've mirrored the reimagining of the Holmes canon with the remix of "People are Strange," and focusing not simply on Sherlock himself, but London and the people in it and how those are factors not only in Sherlock himself, but the city and her people as separate entities. Great build up to the moments of Sherlock deciphering, and the introduction of John as a not-so-stabilizing factor. Thank you!

Man, this is incredible. I love the lost, dangerous, chaotic world London is in this vid (and, indeed, the series, now that you've made me think about it). Which really must have been true of London in the 1890s, too - the end of empire, the dawn of the 20th century, Jack the Ripper, etc. etc. And then Sherlock and Dr. Watson as, first, expressions of that brokenness in culture and then a focused force within it. Awesome.

Um, also the editing was very very shiny and neat. Just amazingly cool.

Oh excellent. I love the way your editing and song choice present all the characters as compromised. They might all be victims, they might all be evildoers. It's a beautiful and complex retelling.

Fantastic! BBC ought to hire you to do their promotional videos for the new series. :) The music choice was smashing, the editing stellar, and the last shot capped it off perfectly - all that strangeness and chaos, and these two at the centre of it. Brilliant.

When I finally break and start making vids of my own, I'm going to come back and stare at this one twenty more times in a row to try and learn from it, because it's brilliant. I love how lucid it is without sacrificing complexity, and the way it builds, and that final shot, god. *clap clap clap*

What a fantastic title, and fits Sherlock perfectly. As always, your use of color and motion are masterful. Thanks for sharing!
