The street where I live

I know in the lyric meme I did a little while ago I described my neighbourhood as

Who lives in a house like this
Who lives in a house like this
In number 18 there lives a big
Butch queen
He's bigger than Tyson and he's twice
As mean
In 666 there lives a Mr. Miller
He's our local vicar and a serial killer
(Space - Neighbourhood)

Now, when I put this I wasn't being entirely serious. I mean yes, we do have a few weirdos like the drunk next door, the neighbour that digs up your plants the minute you turn your back, the guy who has manic depression (though it wouldn't be politically correct of me to call him a weirdo - lets just say he is not "normal") the woman with 20 deranged kids and there are a few other strange folks in our road - me included. But let me get to the point, our street, in a little village, is going to have its own CCTV installed. They are putting them up in a lot of places now but this street is not a crime hotspot, we have very few burglaries, car crime etc. It is generally quite a peaceful place to live. Now what has got me annoyed is the fact that this is a residential area with little crime, what a waste of money. We don't have facilities for our teens; the money could have surely been better spent there. The small amount of crime we do get is because the teens are bored! Another thing that I am a little annoyed/pissed off about is the fact if they do erect this pole to hold the camera it could well be outside my kitchen window. WTF? They'll know that I do the washing up in my underwear and that I cook a full dinner at 3am! lol It will feel intrusive. Someone potentially watching your every move. The whole thing just seems a waste of time and money and do we not have enough of Big Brother?!

I don't like Big Brother to begin with... *sigh*

Okay, while there is no doubt, that cameras in hot spots like subway stations, malls or urban locations have their right to exist to prevent crimes, it doens't make a lot of sense in the environment you describe. In Germany they don't have the right to observe streets and public places and while the terror acts in London gave that discussion another shift, I must admit, that it wouldn't bother me when I go shopping on the Königsstraße in Stuttgart. But have one directly before my kitchen window? Thanks - no thanks! That is taking this a little too far...

I am all for cameras in subways etc where there is an obvious issue of public safety. But to play on public fears to erode our civil liberties that just pisses me off. We already have 3 of these cameras in the main street and another one in the park. It is all such a waste of time and money. Anyway it might not happen these things are often started and then dropped when locals object, it is the same with mobile phone masts and proposed building on empty land near the local hills. There is already a ridiculous amount of cctv cameras. If I leave my house I will in theory at least appear on the three cctv cameras as I walk to the bus stop, be on the camera that is mounted on the bus, be caught on camera in every shop I go in and also in some of the pubs etc. Isn't that enough? Do the authorities really need to know what I have for breakfast as well!

Oh that would make me really mad. If it was a crime hot spot or like you've said a place like subways and town centers then I agree they are worth it but that sounds really unnecessary!

It is unnecessary. I'm sure there will be a few local campaigns to try and stop it happening.
