VVC 08 Club Vivid Vid: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor

Video Title:I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
Song Title/Artist: I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys
Show: Life On Mars/Ashes To Ashes
Summary: The Gene Genie gets his groove on.
Length/Format: 2.53, (Xvid, Stream)
Notes: Premiered at Club Vivid, Vividcon 08.
What struck me most about the differences between LoM and A2A wasn't so much the difference between 70s and 80s but more the socio-economic and regional differences. My 1980s childhood looked much more like LoM than A2A. I went out of my way to make comparisons between Alex's Middle class 80s London and Sam's working class Manchester. In case anyone was wondering the title sequence was heavily influenced by "The Sweeney."

I Bet You Look good On The Dancefloor

Stop making the eyes at me, I'll stop making the eyes at you
And what it is that surprises me is that I don't really want you to
And your shoulders are frozen (cold as the night)
Oh, but you're an explosion (you're dynamite)
Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand
And lighting the fuse might result in a bang, b-b-bang, go!

I bet that you look good on the dancefloor
I don't know if you're looking for romance or
I don't know what you're looking for
I said*, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor
Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984
From 1984!

I wish you'd stop ignoring me, because it's sending me to despair
Without a sound, yeah, you're calling me, and I don't think it's very fair
That your shoulders are frozen (cold as the night)
Oh, but you're an explosion (you're dynamite)
Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand
Lighting the fuse might result in a bang, b-b-bang, go!

I bet that you look good on the dancefloor
I don't know if you're looking for romance or
I don't know what you're looking for
I said*, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor
Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984
From 1984!

Oh, there ain't no love, no Montagues or Capulets
Are just banging tunes and DJ sets and...
Dirty dancefloors, and dreams of naughtiness!

Well, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor
I don't know if you're looking for romance or
I don't know what you're looking for
I said, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor
Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984
From 1984!

Feedback loved.

I love the comparisons that you draw here...and aside from that, the vid is just plain sexy (Gene and the window at 2:25, oof!). The opening sequence is fabulous, too!

Gene and the window is just about my favourite moment from A2A, I had to include it. I had a lot of fun hunting down the comparisons so I'm glad they worked for you.

Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it.

Oh so good: fabulous cuts, really fun and I love its (your, the shows') sense of humor. This vid makes me pine (more so) for whenever either of these series will be available on DVD in the US. Excellent stuff and great song choice. Thanks very much. :-)

Thank you, the humour is such an important part of the show, for me, I'm glad I was able to capture a bit of that with the vid. Fingers-crossed for those DVD releases.

I got to disc 4!

I've only seen one season of LoM and none of Ashes to Ashes (though I know the plotline) and it still just fills me with joy and awe to watch this vid. The editing, as always, is tight and amazing; what really got to me, however, is how well it's structured. You take your time to separately explore all three protagonists and how they interact and tie in with each other and all the important visual motifs, with such seamless skill that I'm just left with my jaw hanging perpetually open. It's fantastic.

Thanks, Nicky.

I found it a bit of a challenge making a fun, fairly pacey, vid like this and still have it make some sort of sense so it's a great relief to know I pulled it off.
