Video Title: Cry Me A River
Song Title/Artist: Cry Me A River - The Cliks
Movie: Lost and Delirious
Summary: Love, lust, angst and obsession.
Length/Format: 3.13 (Xvid, Steaming)

Credits/Titles/Effects
This project called for a style of editing that’s a bit different for me. The source is all teenage angst and the Cliks’ cover of Cry Me a River is particularly powerful. So I tried to be a bit more modern/ funkier with my cutting. To which end I totally used and abused time toggling, time ramps, jump cuts and freeze frames one of which is a total rip off of homage to the Justin Timberlake video. Transition wise there are wipes and blurs as well as regular cross fades.
The song was also edited down to remove some repetition and to make it a more sensible length for this fairly short film.
The titles and credits are fairly unremarkable but they are meant to resemble writing on a chalkboard.

Narrative
It’s not a constructed reality vid but I did play with the narrative a bit. I removed the film’s ending because, with only a few exceptions, dead lesbians are just no fun at all. So I kept what I liked about the source (football, fencing and falconry) and ditched the stuff I had issues with (crazy/dead lesbian syndrome.)
Lost and Delirious pretty heavily identifies Paulie with the falcon, I kind of went with identifying the soon to be eaten mouse with soon to be skewered guy, it was more fun for me.

Ooh, I really liked that.

I've seen a couple vids for that movie but I still haven't gotten around to seeing it.

Real nice vid.

I haven't seen the movie but that's a great video! I love how you used the doorways/poles etc. for transitions! How totally unique and brilliant!

Believe or not I've never seen Lost and Delirious. I know, I'm a very bad gay girl lol. It's on lovefilm list but after watching your vid I'm gonna move it to the send me now list. Another beautifully executed vid hon, I enjoyed a lot even without knowing the film, very emotional. I shall come back and watch it again when I've seen it :)

Thanks! The film is quite obscure so I don't expect many people will have seen it, nice to know you could enjoy it despite not knowing the source though.

It's one of the very few quality lesbian films (though it does have it's faults.) imho so you must watch it. Sometime. :) Thanks, hun.

OOH! I don't think I've ever jumped to download a vid you've posted as quickly as I did this one :-D L&D is one of my very favorite films *glances back over my shoulder where the full-size movie poster hangs framed above my bed* I've seen it literally a hundred times and have most of it memorized. And yet? You made it look fresh and brand new. Seriously. I am astounded at the gorgeous work you did here. I had no idea this film did such beautiful work with motion (or maybe you just manipulated it that beautifully, but still). Your time toggles were so effective, and while I very much like your "regular" editing style, I think you stepped outside your comfort zone masterfully here.

It's funny you mention the metaphor of Jake being the mouse--when I watched the vid, I thought "why is she showing so much footage of the mouse?" and then my question was answered :-) Heh. And I'm in total agreeance about the ending. I always stop the film right after Paulie leaves the dance ;-) (On the other hand, the phrase "girly girl sucky suck" is very fun to incorporate into your social vocabulary.)

So, yes. Thank you so much for making this. You breathed new life into a film I thought I knew like the back of my hand. I really can't tell you how much that impresses me.

wow, i've actually seen this movie (didn't remember the dead lesbians at the end but the other stuff, lol) great vid. I like the energy and the narrative. And isn't that the big thing about vidding: picking and choosing what you like and "forgetting" what you don't. lol. Great job.

This movie was a bit too angsty for me and the professions of love scenes were down right uncomfortable to watch. That being said, your vid is excellent. I particularly like your use of the fencing scenes. Excellent song choice, as well, especially this version of the song.

I absolutely love this version of the song and "Lost and Delirious" always popped into my head whenever I heard it so the vid was inevitable really. I'm glad you enjoyed the vid and that the angst factor didn't put you off. There should definitely be more fencing in high school films it would have made "High School Musical" much more entertaining.

Thanks for feedbacking, it means a lot.

Hey, I'm glad you liked it. It never occurred to me that you'd seen the film, dunno why. And you're right, being able to erase stuff you don't like from the source is the purest kind of joy vidding has to offer.

I'm glad you don't think I've butchered one of your favourite films. Also that you think my foray outside my comfort zone paid off is hugely reassuring. I do try to learn something new with every vid and the lesson with this one was that stepping outside my usual boundaries is fun and the personal rewards are huge. I had so much fun and in fact it's the first of at least half a dozen new lesbian/femslash projects. The ideas for which have been stored up, its years worth of mental vidding that was always put on the back burner.

The mouse metaphor amused me if nothing else. I think I can safely say that I have never found the phrase "girly girl sucky suck" to be a useful addition to a conversation, well maybe there was that one time!

Cheers Jarrow, glad you liked the vid.

This was so intense. I've watched it four or five times now, and the emotion still takes my breath away.

I haven't seen the source--perhaps I would find it overwrought, like Jarrow seemed to--but the way you've handled it, both the radiant joy and crushing dispair ring true to me. My favorite parts were probably the scenes in which you cut them together--the storming around the room/singing in the choir, and--even more intensely--the dance sequence with the happy jumping around interspersed.

I loved the fencing scene, too. I'm not sure, but it seemed to me that one of the couples fighting were two girls, and the other the girl and her rival guy. This made it seem like she was fighting her lover and her rival, or possibly some phantom ideal and her rival. Anyway, it was hella cool!

The unusal editing was a risk worth taking! I loved the way that objects would halt strangely, like the picture that gets trapped in thin air. Gives you the feeling of being arrested, trapped, but also of potential energy (that is eventually unleashed).

Also liked intercutting the opening titles with imagery. I've thought of doing that before but haven't seen too many good examples. I'll keep yours in mind next time I consider that option.

Thanks!

hi there, It's good of you to leave your thoughts. I'm pleased that the vid had an emotional impact without you knowing the source.

That's a good take on the fencing scenes. I like that idea a lot. She's sort of fighting something more than just some random fencing partner.

The freeze-frame in mid air was my homage to the Timberlake video. It's also like you say, to freeze a moment in time before all this fury is released.

It's also good to know that the intro worked because I kept changing my mind about what should go there before deciding to risk introducing the bird before any of the characters.

thanks so much for commenting.

I did enjoy the movie, and I agree with you on the ending. I definitely would have preferred a less tragic end. Otherwise, this movie had tons to recommend it, as is well highlighted by your vid. Thanks so much!

Oh, I love this! The motion and parallels give it such a great energy and make it completely different from any L&D vid I've ever seen. Plus your use of the lyrics give it such a sharp attitude. It's quite infectious.

It also does a great job of showing the journey of their relationship, starting with the winking and flirting at the beginning, to the hopelessness at the end.

I really like your use of jump cuts in this as well. Awesome transitions at 1:11 and 1:13. My favorite part was the paralleled sword fights around 2:45.

Cheers, Brad. The sword fights were fun to edit and I'm pleased with how they came out. The transitions 1:11 and 1:13 are my favourite bit of business in the vid as well and worked out almost exactly as I'd planned, which almost never happens.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you mentioned the energy because that was the big challenge for me on this project, using editing to inject energy.

This is wonderful! (I'd forgotten that I'd watched the movie until about 30 seconds in, heh.)

The swordfighting sums up the way this vid moves for me. Every move is calculated, deft, and when you stand back, looks more like a dance than work. Loved the wipes and intercutting in particular. The former being absolutely seamless, and the latter building tension beautifully everywhere you used it. :}

Hey there, I think you broke my inbox! I'll start with this comment first. :D

The swordfighting really sums up the anger and frustration that Paulie feels and is the most vital part of the vid. At least this way I get to have her walk away with her head high.

It's great to get a compliment on intercutting especially when it's from the master herself.

Wow. I actually hate the song, except that cover makes it awsome and so, so fitting. I've never seen that movie, but this vid makes me want to, even though I know I'd have so many problems with it, especially if they end up dead in the end.

Good job.

I expecially love the scenes of what's-her-name kissing the sword, and that scene at night when her's tugging at the other girls hand? Very powerful.

I have to agree that this version of the song is more powerful than the original. It gave me a chance to vid this film the way I wanted to so it's great that you feel that it's appropriate. I do have some issues with the film and it does end badly, as they almost invariably do in these kind of movies, so it might not be one to rush to see.

Thanks for the feedback.

Somehow I made a huge error and never commented to tell you how much I love this vid. The editing with the jumpcuts, the time toggling, the blurs, transitions, and the movement is amazing. There's so much pain contained in the vid, yet you managed to let the love come through as well.
