The L Word

So I have just finished watching this weeks L Word and my thoughts on the season are …

It was a pretty decent ending to the season with Bett and Tina finally having their baby. It finished off the pregnancy storyline whilst leaving open for next season Alice and Dana’s relationship issues, Jenny’s mental health problems and Bett’s unemployment.
Am I the only one though, that felt embarrassed at the horribly stilted lesbian politics discussion at the wake?
On the whole I have been quite disappointed with the writing this season, characters have behaved erratically and characters and storylines have disappeared without any adequate explanation. I love Dana and Alice and I find their insecurities quite endearing. Shane remains a good representation of a kind of dyke you find in the “real world” that never usually shows up on TV.

Next season though I can only hope certain things happen/don’t happen

  1. Less Betty and specifically less of the L Word theme tune popping up in weird
    variations during the show.
  2. Less strange sound effects!! Was that “Shane Shane Shane” during that sex
scene?! And didn’t Tina hear some “Bett Bett Bett” sound effects some
    time? rofl
  3. Ok I get it – Jenny is an “artistic” type who’s driven her self a little crazy
so no more friggin circus dream sequences! Please god!
  4. Please please please give Jenny and Alice something decent to wear next season.
  5. Please please please bring back that monstrous movie producer! I luvvved her lol
  6. And please god let them handle the self harm storyline in a realistic and
    sensitive way.

So I will probably be watching next season in the hope that it improves.

I just saw the second season up to 2x12 and to be honest, I can’t still not figure out, how this was a good show in the first season. Perhaps I should try and get a hold on it. But this year the characters were so poorly written, that in the middle of the season, I still had problems naming the brunettes.

Okay, I have their names down now, but I really didn’t care much about anyone, besides Shane and her DJ and even that storyline went nuts with Jenny involvement. And I can’t stand the supposedly artistic writer and her way to express herself – ehm, I mean depress herself. Sure, some people love pain, but when you love it so much, why not commit suicide and get it over with? Was there one ep were she didn’t cry? I kinda liked the introduction of Helena, even when she was a rich creep, but her character felt so over the top, that I didn’t care and I even have the feeling, that I shouldn’t bitch about this show, because I not for once felt emotional involved in it. Seeing the eps and the way the characters were dragged around, I felt like, yeah, whatever, I’m sure, if I was a fan this would bug me…

Oh and ITA with your wishlist for the next season!

Yes Jenny is probably the worst character written in the history of TV. I dislike her intensely but I get what some of her problems are. There is potential here for an interesting character and people with mental health problems are hugely mis-represented in the media. The trouble is Jenny doesn’t seem traumatised and on the verge of a breakdown to me she just seems pretentious, weird and incredibly self absorbed. I don’t know if it’s just that the character is badly written or the actress is bad at her job. I think everyone else’s acting is pretty good and helps paper over the huge cracks in the character development.

I know the show is made on a shoestring but the whole thing just feels like a media under grads project with its amateur writing, poor lighting, poor editing and the soundtrack put together by someone’s mate who happens to have a cello!

Xandra needs to get into TV pretty damn quick! lol
