charmax: (Vidder malfunction)
[personal profile] charmax
Tagged by the awesome [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift and I in turn tag every vidder on my flist.

1.) When did you first start vidding?
My first vid posted online was May 03. That's very nearly 5 years!

2) What would you say was your inspiration or motivation to start doing it?
My friend Sassy persuaded me to start watching Buffy and on the mooch for episodes on Kazaa I came across an evil Willow vid and some Willow/Tara ones (haven't got a clue who made them) but I thought they were cool and I wanted to try it. At the time I didn't even know they were called vids and I certainly didn't know there was any kind of community/subculture out there.

3) What do you or have you vidded?
For a long time I was exclusively vidding Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel but since then I've tried my hand at Lost, Alias, Firefly, Veronica Mars, various movies, Xena, Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica, Life On Mars, Doctor Who, Deadwood, The L Word and probably others.

4) Where do you draw your inspiration from for vids? Is it the song? An idea? Someone else?
90% of the time it's the song that screams "vid me!" Once in a while though I have the idea/concept and have to hunt down a suitable song. And on more than one occasion [livejournal.com profile] astartexx has been the motivation behind a vid. Participating in Sweet Charity has also been inspirational.

5) What was your favorite video to make or do?
I've made quite a few vids over the last 5 years, they're all my babies, don't make me choose.

6) What was your least favorite video to make or do?
Unfortunately, it was my first Sweet Charity vid. I came to love it but it was hard work and I don't feel there was much of me in it. There have of course been plenty of vids I've started and then scrapped when the process became too hateful.

7) Which video are you most proud of?
Same as question 5.

8) What's the best feedback or comment you've ever gotten?
[livejournal.com profile] astartexx is always so generous with her feedback giving me on many occasion pages and pages worth. The experience with [livejournal.com profile] killabeez during my last round of Sweet Charity was invaluable. Her feedback/beta was kind, insightful, incredibly helpful and provided me with things to think about for future projects. Over the years I've had so many wonderful comments which I'm ever so grateful for.

9) What is your opinion on clip theft?
Once upon a time it used to drive me nuts. These days, although I still hate the idea of clip theft, I just find it too exhausting to deal with. If it's rubbed in my face I still feel obliged to do something though.

10) Favorite genre to vid to (comedy, angst, romance, drama, AU)?
I'm rather partial to character studies. Relationship vids but not necessarily romance are also something I like to explore.

11) Favorite pairing(s)?
Shippiness is never the reason I'm in a fandom (well except for Xena) but I do enjoy Spike/Angel, Wes/Angel, Gene/Sam, Gene/Alex, House/Cuddy, Buffy/Faith, Master/Doctor, Doctor/Rose, Starbuck/anyone not Lee. I suppose the ships start to add up once I think about it.

12) What just drives you up the wall when it comes to vidding?
I have a few pet peeves but at the top of the list is when meta turns to self involved navel gazing. Also effects for effects sake, [livejournal.com profile] millylicious says it better than me "A good program doesn't a good vidder make" I don't like how I need a new comp every 3 years to support my vidding habit, I hate how unreliable external hard drives seem to be too.

13) Is vidding a pastime, hobby or something to help gain experience to do more later in life?
It's an all consuming hobby that I eat, sleep and breathe. I'll be vidding when I'm 80, I can't imagine ever giving up.

14) What is your latest project or idea for your next vid if your muse isn't dead?
I'm working on 2 ClubVivid vids, A LoM/A2A and a Torchwood. Then I'll be taking a short break and then there's a list as long as my arm waiting for me.

15) Finally, what kind of words of wisdom would you offer someone who wants to vid/ is a newbie?
Cliché alert: Vidding is hard it takes perseverance, dedication and a bloody good beta. Don't forget to have fun.

Remind me to thank Sassy for exposing you to Buffy and then indirectly to vidding, which made you discover your vidding talent. I do hope you vid until you're eighty and even after that! :D

Yes, Sassy had no idea what she was unleashing. Maybe by the time I'm eighty I'll have mastered After-Effects CS50.

Hee, it's that icon! You're way more eloquent than me in your second language no less, I am made of fail when it comes to words. I should remind myself I've said I'll never stop vidding next time I'm whining to myself about my vidding woes.

Do you prefer one over the other? Like you, my inspiration is almost always song-driven. Having to hunt down a song to match an idea tends to be a painful and frustrating experience for me. Alas, it's been happening more and more lately.

Hee! I might try and hold you to that. ;)

I hate having to look for a song, it always ends up as a compromise and you can be sure that at some point after I've made the vid I'll stumble upon the song I should've used.

I totally have a get out clause that allows me a 40 year hiatus. :D
