Does anyone on my flist know of, or have any guides on how I could convert an old vhs tape to dvd? I have looked around quite a bit but can't find anything very helpful. Oh and while I'm asking, are there any specific hardware/software that I would need to do this?

Yes, there is. You need a Vhs/DVD recorder, not sure if that's what they're called excatly. But they run about 300 something dollars here in the US. It's dual, has VHS and the DVD. Pop in the tape, and record to dvd.

Not sure if there is another way, probably hooking up your VCR to the computer, or dvd burner? I am not sure.

That sounds very simple. I don't have a vhs/dvd recorder at the moment but I had planned on buying one at some point. I know there is a way to hook up the vcr to the computer, but how, not sure either. Hmmm.

Looking at the prices they are pretty cheap now. I think that's what I shall do. Go buy one of them. Thanks Cassie. :)

Your welcome! Over here they dropped down a bit as well, not excatly sure how much they're going for here last time I checked. But I am glad I was able to help.

aww im late but there is another way to connect your vcr directly to your tv, i think you would need a PVR or capture card quality is what your vcr outputs. It runs the same as the price of a vhs/dvd player only difference that i've seen is that you don't have to babysit the DVD/vcr deal. With a pvr card you have to watch the capture, and playing with the codecs and all sorts of stuff.

I have a VHS/DVD player that uses compatible DVDs my pc uses (DVD-R) and i can just rip and clip like a regular DVD/vidding project. :D

hope this helps.

Yeah, that sounds a lot more complicated... I think I shall purchase the vhs/dvd recorder. Why make things more difficult for myself when there is no real need. Thanks for your suggestion though Mausie. :D

I'm a bit late with the suggestions but I think you have already come to the same conclusion.

We picked up a cheap DVD recorder (about £80) and linked it to the VCR and transferred old tape footage onto a DVD. The man with the 'brains' is out right now but I can get him to tell me which output goes where etc when he get's back. (Sorry I wasn't paying attention). It is simpler solution than using a PC with a capture card I think.

Yep, I've decided it's about time that I upgraded my dvd recorder anyway. I'm having a look round now to see what stores are offering the best deals. Max, my better half, will have no problems setting it all up. Thank you Andrea. :D

Hey ! :)

When I asked to my "computer guy" (lol), a couple of months back, what I would need to transfer clips from my VHS tapes to my computer..he told me I needed a software (with a PCI card) to capture video from a VCR .. this is the one he was talking about : Pinnacle Studio AV/DV

I found the version 9.0 on Ebay, at a really low cost : http://cgi.ebay.ca/PINNACLE-STUDIO-AV-DV-POWERFUL-CREATIVE-VIDEO-EDITING_W0QQitemZ8791034340QQcategoryZ3761QQssPageNameZWD4VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

I don't know if it would be less trouble that way..but my "computer guy" told me it was the software to have ;) ..

So I'm just sharing with you :) So you know all the possibilities ;)
