Date: 2007-09-07 10:01 pm (UTC)By the way, I've finally gotten into SPN, and I just wanted to tell you that I really loved your vid "Protège Moi". Awesome work, it looks fantastic and it works so well with the song, it's really stuck in my head.
"The Way We Get By" was fun, which reminds me that I haven't found many uplifting SPN vids yet. I love the angst, but it was nice to see someone focus on the light side for a change. :D

Date: 2007-09-08 06:43 am (UTC)I'm pleased you've been enjoying SPN and that "Protège Moi" made such an impression. There will be a John Winchester vid coming soon, hopefully. Then I'm going to be remastering "The Way We Get By" to use the DVD source and you are absolutely right there should be more fun in the SPN fandom.

Date: 2007-09-08 07:21 am (UTC)I guess it helped that I expected the show to be a standalone monster of the week show. I didn't expect the beautiful character and story arc developments. Also, I'm glad that the show isn't so full of itself. It doesn't claim "I'm the best show ever!", which The X-Files did, even when its glory days were long gone.
Have you seen Sisabet and Luminosity's vid Woman's Work? It's really well done, but it didn't affect me much. While watching the show, I noticed that I tend to identify with male characters, I rarely identify with the damsel in distress because that's not who am I. I'm not easily scared, but you should see my husband when we watch SPN. Hehe. Anyway, I had a much stronger reaction to male characters in distress, and not just the main characters. I've probably been conditioned that way ever since I laid my eyes on "Scraecrow and Mrs King" or "MacGyver". :D
"Protège Moi" was really cool. Dark and haunting, that how I'd describe it.

Date: 2007-09-08 10:18 am (UTC)As for "Woman's Work". I have seen it. I think they make a valid point but, truthfully, it will never be my favourite Supernatural vid because I always feel bludgeoned whenever I watch it. I am hopeful that SPN will find a way next season to find stronger roles for its female characters. I don't see me in any of the damsels either.
If you like the darkness of "Protège Moi" I hope you'll enjoy the Papa Winchester vid because it is full of teh angst but in a controlled calm way.

Date: 2007-09-08 10:50 am (UTC)That's what I love so much about the show. It doesn't take itself too seriously. The "Tall Tales" episode was a rip off of TXF' "Bad Blood" and there are so many storylines and (un?)intentional injokes ("There's a Chupacabra a couple of states down.") that just add to the show because those stories are made in a less pompous way.
I was a fan of the mythology in TXF's early years when it still made sense. I know Chris Carter did the best he could, but unfortunately, he made it up as he went along, and I guess it sort of still makes sense in the end if you really suspend your disbelief, but it's frustrating that Carter didn't plan those arcs as well as SPN or "Babylon 5" did, for example.
The stand alone episodes were my favorite ones as well. I hated that Chris Carter was so full of himself whenever he talked about his show. It's okay to be proud of one's work, but especially in later years when the show wasn't as good as it had been any more, it annoyed me big time. I guess it's smarter to offer resolutions along the way instead of building towards a big finish. It's less frustrating for the audience.
I've gotta admit that I'm a bit biassed and bitter when it comes to TXF. It was the first show I was really fannish about, and like a couple of my friends, we were very disappointed when the show deteriorated and stopped making sense to us. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it was a very painful experience for us.
I am hopeful that SPN will find a way next season to find stronger roles for its female characters. I don't see me in any of the damsels either.
Me, too. They need to create female characters who are equal to Sam & Dean. Ellen was a start in the right direction, I guess, but it wasn't enough. I realize that not every show can have their Susan Ivanova ("Babylon 5") or Aeryn Sun ("Farscape"); heck even Brenda Johnson ("The Closer"), who would lose every chick fight on the planet, would be a more impressive "strong" female character than any of the damsels they wrote. Jo could have been interesting, but they shouldn't have played the "little sister" card the way they did.
If you like the darkness of "Protège Moi" I hope you'll enjoy the Papa Winchester vid because it is full of teh angst but in a controlled calm way.
Angst! Yay! I'm one of those strange people who want to fully experience a show, identify with its characters and feel their joy and pain. So yeah, I'm sure I'll love it. I'll let you know, of course. :D

Date: 2007-09-08 11:19 am (UTC)Someone else told me recently that there were a bunch of ex x-files staff working on SPN I'm choosing to see this as a good thing.
I enjoyed both Ellen and Jo as characters but was a bit disappointed that with Jo in particular they ran out of things to do with her and she was just abandoned. I suppose new women characters will mess with the dynamic between the brothers which worries me a bit. I do have plenty of other shows with strong female leads so I can probably afford to enjoy one that's all about the boys.

Date: 2007-09-12 09:37 am (UTC)My thoughts exactly. The first three, maybe even four and five seasons were fantastic, but afterwards, it slowly got worse.

Kripke isn't Carter, and the SPN's creepy look and feel is due to some ex X-Files writers and directors' involvement. It's kinda strange to trust Kripke, but I really think he knows where he's heading for season 3. Maybe not season 4, but if he delivers a great season 3, he can always see where he wants to go next.

I agree.

Since the new female characters are supposed to be antagonists of the boys instead of allies like Ellen or Jo, I think it'll work. We'll have to wait and see, I guess... which won't take long. October will be here soon. :)
