ETA: What do people actually get out of Facebook? I do not understand...

I was asking myself the very same question last night about Facebook....

It's a little bit bizarre. It feels like just a whole lot of spamming and a haven for advertisers. How do you actually communicate with your friends?

I'm rarely on there but I do have some nieces who I can get hold of who appear to actually live on Facebook. And a couple of friends abroad.

And yes to the spamming and advertising. I much prefer LJ.

I have no idea either. I have a profile and it was fun at first, a few applications, a few games, a few quizzes. But I never actually go - after a week, I got tired of the applications and most of the are ridiculous now. Plus, the invites? Uncontrolled, I get flooded with them for friends who want me to add this application or that application. It's freaking ridiculous and just boring.

I'm not the only one then!

the ads and applications are really irritating, but as far as talking to people, its the easiest way to do it. its good for saying hi to your friends from highschool, when you really dont want to call them. and its good for leaving links, or quick thoughts to your friends. its also good for spying on people to see if they are in a relationship and other things about them (usually when you or one of your friends is interested in someone). haha :P

i know its vapid and totally anti-face to face communication, but i cant pretend i dont use it :P

I can appreciate the spying aspect, cus that's always fun. I just don't find it remotely useful for communicating. All I've seen is a shout wall which has very limited appeal and then a whole lot of silly "dress my pimp" style apps.

yeah, i mean usually if someoen writes on your wall, you write back on there's, so there is at least a communication thread. but i hear you, those apps are totally unbearable. i keep far away from them.

I only view facebook as a way of potentially contacting people you lost touch with, but that's it. I have a profile there but never goes to communicate with people once I have their real email and stuff.

I can see what you're doing as useful.

Seriously, when Dor talked about Facebook, I thought it was something really impressive and interesting. Then I signed up. It gets boring after... umm... ten minutes? I don't do there a lot except catching up with old friends and chatting with them from time to time. It's not a big deal, I can do that with e-mail or LJ.

I'm just totally bewildered by it.

And I'm bewildered about the fact that you never even watched Seinfeld! I didn't know there was someone on the planet that didn't watch at least one episode. Hell, even aliens probably caught a glimpse of it.

Nope, never even caught a glimpse of it, strange as it may seem. Hut heck look at the rest of the list for evidence of my Herculean viewing habits, one was bound to slip through the cracks!

Maybe it's for the best... Perhaps it's because there are reruns and re reruns and re of re reruns here, but the Seinfeld stops being funny after a while. I can't stand watching it anymore. Same for Friends, but Friends is still watchable.

When I first got Facebook it was still exclusive to college students, which was a big part of its appeal. But when it opened up to the public, I upped the security on my profile and stopped really doing anything with it. Now it's basically a way for friends to look up my contact information (i.e. cell phone number, address, etc).

I don't know the history of facebook, I'm quite the newbie and it's been some time since I was in college. My sisters who are a few years younger than me all think it's a great place. I'm not sure how much I'll be using it myself but I can see it being helpful in tracking folk down.

Just be careful with your security settings. Facebook's gotten into a lot of trouble with data mining and tracking user activities on external websites.

I recently found a long-lost penpal on Facebook. It was so lovely to correspond with her again. Other than that, I see not it's usefulness.

Another Red Dwarf fan? That show needs to be vidded. *hint, hint*

I'd love to watch a Red Dwarf vid but I don't think I'm ever likely to do one myself. Actually, Blackadder is the one on this list that I really want to vid because it was my first fannish love. Never found a song though.

Hmmm, now there's a challenge, a suitable song for Blackadder. I'll let you know if one comes to mind!
