I'm your Man

If you want a lover
I'll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I'll wear a mask for you
If you want a partner
Take my hand
Or if you want to strike me down in anger
Here I stand
I'm your man
If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
I'll examine every inch of you
If you want a driver
Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
You know you can
I'm your man

Ah, the moon's too bright
The chain's too tight
The beast won't go to sleep
I've been running through these promises to you
That I made and I could not keep
Ah but a man never got a woman back
Not by begging on his knees
Or I'd crawl to you baby
And I'd fall at your feet
And I'd howl at your beauty
Like a dog in heat
And I'd claw at your heart
And I'd tear at your sheet
I'd say please, please
I'm your man

And if you've got to sleep
A moment on the road
I will steer for you
And if you want to work the street alone
I'll disappear for you
If you want a father for your child
Or only want to walk with me a while
Across the sand
I'm your man

Oh man this was so much fun. I didn't really get the whole "celebration of media clichés" summary until I watched it. And then I just had to grin because you're right, they're total clichés, but they're fun clichés. :D Gotta point out some favorite moments:

0:16 - Scratching bum on beat. LOL!
0:40 - "If you want a partner take my hand." Aww, I melted a little.
0:45 - Hee, montage of angry femmeslashy goodness.
1:04 - "I'll examine every inch of you." Oh yes, the female gaze is where it's at. ;)
1:52 - Love the call and answer with the smooches.
1:57 - Shattered glass to coins falling - AWESOME.
3:02 - Kisses on the TVs, love it.

I literally laughed out loud at the last shot. :D This was awesome Charmax, you totally rock!

Hiya DC. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I had a blast making it so it's great that the sense of fun comes across. I'm so glad you picked out some of your favourite moments and even more pleased that they tally with some of mine. I do love a bit of angry eyeshagging!

Thanks once again for the lovely feedback. :)

I am soooo late to this one, but I just wanted to say how fabulous it was. It's like a documentary of femslash: to music! FTW! \o/ I had a lot of fun trying to pick the various sources, and I know I'll watch this one many times.

People seem to be getting a lot of fun out of playing "name that source" which makes my not so fun game of "find that source" worth it. *g*

I love your description of the vid as a documentary of femslash set to music, wish I'd thought of that for my summary.

Thanks so much for commenting..

I only just now saw this, and holy crap is it awesome. :D First of all, the song choice was excellent. I went into this expecting Leonard Cohen (I didn't notice the artist, just the song title) and was pleasantly surprised (though I like Leonard Cohen quite a bit as well). I didn't quite understand what you meant by celebrating clichés until I watched it. Every bit of this made me smile and feel all warm and fuzzy (possibly partially because I love a lot of the source material). I even liked the way you used the Dead Lesbian™ cliché- when it happens/has happened it's sad and angry-making and makes me roll my eyes, but it's still representation and history and I liked that you showed that. Like one of the above posters mentioned, it really is like a documentary of femslash set to music! Everything was so in time with the music and I loved the transitions from/into the different sources. They all blended together so well as if they all went together. I also really loved the literalism, it made it fun! :D

Also, wow, I did not know there even was a such day as International Day of Femslash! :)

P.S. I didn't realize this comment was going to be so long, sorry about that. :P

Date: 2008-08-31 05:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] charmax.livejournal.com
Yeah, this cover is a bit of a leap from the Leonard Cohen version but it definitely helps set the tone for the vid. I didn't want to make an angry vid about representation or lack thereof but I did want to point out how often the same themes/images reoccur over decades. I'm happy to celebrate the clichés but I would definitely welcome some more diverse representation. As for the Dead Lesbian cliché, if you didn't laugh, you'd cry!

I'm glad to have this called a documentary set to music especially as "The Celluloid Closet" was my jumping off point for the vid.

I believe this year was the first International Day of Femslash, Ralst at [livejournal.com profile] passion_perfect organised it. It is happening again next year so keep a look out for it. :D

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback!

Love it, love it! *watches vid on repeat* A couple of moments that stood out to me:
1:00 the transition from Willow to Xena
1:12 ...lovely
1:13-1:20 Man, I hadn't realized how cliched the rose and the face stroke had been used. (Not that I love them any less for it.)
3:03-3:04 Nice pairing. I've always wanted to see or use that Xena clip in a vid.

I'm going to have to all of the sources in here that I haven't seen now. *eep* That's a lot! *rushes off to catch up on femslash*

Aah, thank you for saying such nice things about the vid and for pointing out your favourite parts.

I have always been struck by how similar the Tara/Willow and Xena/Gabrielle scenes were not just the painting but also the lighting and colours.

I have to admit the rose is probably my favourite cliché of all. I don't really care how many times it gets used it's always kinda sexy.

I hope you enjoy your femslash marathon!

Just made my way here today via a rec from [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings, and I must have watched the vid ten times already. It makes me stupidly, ridiculously happy, in the kind of way that brings tears to my eyes. I just... I have no words for the incredible joy it is to see something like this, such a rich, beautiful celebration of f/f love through the ages (it's the period and black-and-white stuff that does it for me, the sense it brings of an on-going history, and, paired with the sci-fi clips, of a future).

Thank you so much for making and sharing this!

Someone linked to this on their top 5 vids of the year list today, so as a fan of women in drag, women kissing, and Cohen covers, I dutifully clicked through.

Now I am kicking myself for not finding it months ago! All the rewatches I could have enjoyed between July and now! I love the sly, defiant joy of the piece. And now to start with the rewatches...

I made a top 5?! That's awesome. I'm glad you've found the vid enjoyable and worthy of rewatching. Your "defiant joy" description is a perfect description of the tone I was aiming for and says it so much more succinctly and accurately than I could have.

Thank you so much for commenting.

I don't see you you should be repentant. It may have cliques, but you handled them brilliantly. You're visuals made the song even more amusing. It may not be as technically flashy looking as some of your others but the subtly and wit involved in this one make it one of my favorites of yours.

This is probably the most personal vid I've made this year and for that reason I have been especially pleased by the response to the vid. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of some of my other successful vids and I find it quite reassuring that it didn't need it.

Thanks for taking the lovely comment.

So much fun! I love the femslash goggles mixing together big dyke icon movies (I swear Bound is still the hottest film ever made) with stuff like Bend it Like Beckham which don't quite go there. And Debs! And the image of Buffy & Faith! Gosh those cliches are apparent when all put together like that, but I'm not sure it makes me enjoy them any less. Apart from Better than Chocolate I think it has all the femslash references I'd ever want & then some, but hey that's the West Coast Canuck bias talking ;-)

I had a blast sorting source for this vid and there was a ton of stuff I didn't find room for including Better than Chocolate. I do have a certain affection for a lot of the clichés amazing how they mount up when you start looking through. So many balcony scenes, who knew?
