Are there any vidders out there thinking of switching to the new windows vista? I'm thinking about it but I'm concerned how it'll affect me being able to rip and encode... I'm not sure if microsoft have made it more difficult - copyright protection and all that?

this is a totally uninformed comment, but when i was browsing wikipedia today for a different reason, i saw something about intellectual rights protection in regards to vista. i would take a look at wiki for some possible information

I think I'm going to have to take a general browse round, wiki will be my first stop. Thanks Jessie.

I'm planning on waiting for a while after it's released just to see how other people react to/manage with it. I'm also gonna wait till I have a better processor and yet another hard drive >_

I am all set to go with it, it's just not knowing where I'm going to be vidding wise... I will most likely wait a few weeks like yourself.

I'm surprised you haven't heard about it yet, there has been a lot of controversy about it and it's been on all the main news channels and in the press etc. Anyway, it's the new windows OS and you can take a peek here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/default.mspx

It hasn't been getting much press coverage here, though I managed to catch a small article on one of our news sites today. And then I asked M., who got to run some demos at work. He thinks it works pretty well, but is a bit hefty for its size. Of course he wasn't approaching it from a vidder's angle.

I'm getting a new computer in about a week's time so I think I'm still going to be on XP for a good few years to come. Switching operating systems give me the willies. It took me about three months to work Linux and I still can't navigate my way around a Mac. :D

Someone over at Reverie said that a friend installed it, and pretty much none of the vidding programs he used worked on the new Vista, on top of the copyright issue. Also, on top of it, the small print states that regularly, Windows will scan your computer for undesirable programs (the definition is foggy) and remove it without any warning or asking for consent.

I definitely won't be upgrading.

Thanks, Milly. It's good to hear some info that specifically relates to vidding. I'd heard about the Windows scan thing. I really resent the Big Brother aspect of that. I don't want Microsoft dictating to me what is undesirable. It is worrying that new PCs will be pre-installed with Vista so eventually most people will end up with it anyway.

Yes, it's definitely is. I'm sure someone, somewhere, will figure out a way to disable it, but it still very much feels like someone is looking over the user's shoulder, and that's not something I appreciate.
