New TV Shows (No spoilers)

So far nothing has grabbed me the way Veronica Mars and Lost did last year.
I watched Bones because DB was in it. He certainly looks prettier than he has for a while. It was decent enough police procedural show and the main characters were entertaining and interesting. It just wasn’t amazing and the truth is if it wasn’t for my curiosity about how David manages to break away from his Angel persona I probably wouldn’t have bothered watching it at all. I’ll probably stick with it for now though just to see if it can build on a reasonable start.
I was looking forward to Supernatural. I liked the idea of the show and I thought the two brothers were quite interesting and there were some quite spooky moments in it. The problem is that there are a lot of quite similar shows premiering this season and it seems inevitable some of them will fall by the wayside after a few eps and I don’t want to get invested in a show that won’t make it to the end of a season. I will have to see how the other ghostly/alien/creepy shows turn out before deciding how many of them are worth keeping up with.
Threshold is another of the new sci-fi shows. I have to say I was really disappointed in this one. It seems to think it is X files the next generation but I found it really hard to care much about any of the characters. They seemed to be taken from stock character types. There’s the female professional with no private life and some major daddy issues, the gung ho soldier manfully hiding his secret pain and then there are three maladjusted science geeks all very familiar territory.
Thanks to
xandra_ptv I have a new obsession; the 4400 which I was initially sceptical about but that I decided to try because she rated it highly. I was hooked after the first episode and watched the first season in one session because for the first time in ages I really had to know what happened next. I love Shawn and Richard and the creepy little girl whose name I can’t spell.
Oh and yay for British sci-fi Hex is back minus the bland, blonde jock but with the addition of a time travelling brutal kickass bitch that I am already a little in love with.
Still on the agenda to watch:
Rome
Surface
Out of practice
How I met your mother
Invasion
Criminal minds
Ghost whisperer
Killer Instinct
Night stalker
And of course –
Veronica Mars
Lost
Alias

Date: 2005-09-20 09:17 pm (UTC)And I have to disagree about Threshold, I find it gripping so far, sure the permission is a bit over the top, but I’m really interested in the next ep and I found the science factor handled quite well and the ‘sticking to protocol’ in face of such a crisis. If the characters are able to break out of the stereotypes they are to a certain extend now and find their footing, then I will totally enjoy the show. And I love my Data in this role… Perhaps this is the Star trek geek in me!
Supernatural was a positive surprise for me, the special effects are awesome and it’s quite disturbing and creepy, the White Woman storyline was handled great and the overall arc with their mother and his girlfriend was interesting introduced and the two boys are cool. Loved the cassettes and the codes they established, it’s funny, smooth and if this gonna be a road show, I’m sure taking part of the trip.
I was disappointed in ‘How I met your mother’, Aly just isn’t funny or can’t act, not made up my mind about that completely. But her character annoyed me the most out of the bunch, crazy mix from Willow and Michelle, which doesn’t bond well with me. The blond is cool and reminds me of Niles, with more sex drive, but other than that… Uhm, nope.
One show I highly recommend is Matthew Fox old show ‘Haunted’, I saw the seven eps that aired and they are all surprisingly fantastic. You should really take a look at this, his character Frank Taylor is a private investigator that is haunted by spirits after he died for a short instance after being stabbed. Too bad we won’t find out about the bigger picture they set up, but the ghosts of the weeks are really interesting, his way of handling his gift is interesting and they have some shock moments that really make you gasp. Chilling, this show begs to be vidded, cinematic stunning pictures and characters that won’t be stereotypes and complicated and real relationships and emotions, no wonder he was proud of this show, even when it got cancelled!
I watched a few eps of Afterlife and I don’t like this show, part of the problem is the melodrama and the hysterics of the main character, I prefer Medium here all the way…

Date: 2005-09-20 09:58 pm (UTC)I will stick with ‘Threshold’ but I really was underwhelmed by it. I just couldn't connect to any of the characters. I think it probably suffered from the fact that I watched it after back to back eps of ‘The 4400’ which has similar male and female leads but with much more depth and charm. Still I remember not being blown away by ‘Veronica Mars’ until about six episodes in so I will wait and see if ‘Threshold’ delivers for me.
I must admit I was surprised at the quality of ‘Supernatural’ which I hadn't expected much of, I only really watched it for the guy who used to be in ‘Dark Angel’ but got sucked into the story and already want to know more about what happened to their parents.
I haven't watched ‘How I met your mother’ yet but I didn't have very high hopes for it. It is just my loyalty to jossverse actors that made me try it. I have to admit that although I loved Willow to bits everything else that I have seen Aly in has just sucked.
I have never heard of ‘Haunted’ and I would check it out if only I hadn't already got an insane amount of TV to watch and I do have to squeeze my real life in somewhere. lol

Date: 2005-09-20 10:34 pm (UTC)About Supernatural, like you, I was positively surprised about the way they established these two brothers and their character quirks, they sure make a good team. Did you ever come around to follow Xandras other advice? Arrested Development? Now that is comedy, needs some eps to getting used to or at least the pilot, but it is remarkable. Hysterical, dirty and insanely over the top, I haven’t laughed so hard since early Frasier… And it’s even better!
‘The 4400’ was really fast in launching their permission and moving the storyline along. So I think part of your problem is that Threshold is a bit slow with introducing their mystery, but I like the unanswered questions it promotes so far…

Date: 2005-09-21 07:18 am (UTC)I caught an ep of "Arrested Development" on late night tv and to be honest I didn't really get it but if it takes a few eps maybe I'll make a point of catching it again.

Ok did I say I had ADS. you are talking to someone who sat through two seasons of the L word during which fuck all happened! lol My problem with Threshold isn't it's pace but that so far I feel it lacks any nuances that will make it more distinctive from all the similiar shows this season.

Date: 2005-09-20 09:55 pm (UTC)Supernaturnal was just to creepy for me,
I was disappointed in Out of Practice, I thought it had the potential to be a lot funnier then it was.
I haven't seen How I meet my Wife and so can't weigh in on Ally
I did watch Surface and IMO this show rocks, it appears to have a complex and evolving storyline that will leave viewers invovled and haninging till next week a la X-files and Lost
And may I trumpet House to annoy one, this scarsitic vicodine addicted doctor and his team rock like none other, I can't explain this show or its appeal you just have to watch.

Date: 2005-09-20 10:05 pm (UTC)I am already hooked on 'House'. For me it just pips 'Grey's Anatomy' mostly because Hugh Laurie is just so totally awesome.

Date: 2005-09-21 06:37 am (UTC)Alright the best part of how i met your mother was the very last line and but otherwise was just so weak.
Kitchen Confidential - the one with Nick Brendon, isn't bad. i recommend the screener version there is 3 more minutes which i think had the best scenes.
I dled Bones but haven't watched yet. seems so run of the mill.
So do you guys think it's weird i'm avoid all lost like scifi shows this year? that just so isn't me.
And yeah! 4400 is on the rise of fandom i'm so happy.

Date: 2005-09-21 07:37 am (UTC)The truth is that 'Bones' is pretty much your standard csi style investigation show. It does have a slimmed down DB in the daylight though. But I suppose a perfectionist like you would expect sophisticated characterisation and involved plotting as well. lol
You should definitely catch the new season of 'Hex' it airs Sunday nights here so I guess you would be able to get it on Mondays. They have added a great character, ditched my least favourite one and got rid of the fringe from hell that one character had.
Oh and thank you for pushing me into watching 4400 it's the best thing I've seen in a while! :D

Date: 2005-09-21 08:03 pm (UTC)The sci-fi this season is a bit overwhelming, but like Charmax said, if it’s the end of Reality TV, I ride the wave. You should check the pilots Supernatural and Threshold out, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to stick with it.
